Dr. Víctor M. Torres-Vélez is an anthropologist and scholar of Latinx, Latin American, and Caribbean studies whose work bridges critical medical anthropology, political ecology, and the coloniality of power. As an Associate Professor at CUNY’s Hostos Community College, he has developed and taught interdisciplinary courses on migration, race, gender, and environmental justice. A leading voice in pedagogical innovation, Dr. Torres-Vélez integrates technology and critical theory to foster AI literacy among historically marginalized students. His recent work explores the ethical and epistemological stakes of generative AI through a postcolonial and decolonial lens, emphasizing the need for culturally grounded, justice-oriented approaches to digital learning. He co-directs the Center for Teaching and Learning at Hostos and has led institution-wide initiatives to train faculty in equitable AI integration. His teaching and research empower students to navigate—and reshape—the technological systems that increasingly mediate knowledge, labor, and identity in the post-pandemic academy.
